1. SOLDERING AND THERMAL CONSIDERATIONS
P.F.D., Inc. Ceramic dielectric resonators are suitable for surface mount soldering via standard production techniques. These components are susceptable to thermal shock fracture in both heating and cooling. A maximum heating and cooling rate of 90C per minute is recommended. Limit maximum soldering temperature to 250C for 1 minute. Resonators may be hand soldered if first pre-heated to approximate soldering temperature. Mildly activated rosin (RMA) fluxes are sufficiently active to insure reliable, soldering.
Since copper electrode solubility is very low, the use of silver bearing solder alloys to minimize leaching is not required, and maximum soldering time at temperature is relatively non-critical.
When soldering low frequency, large profile components (8mm and up), an additional concern is the thermal expansion mis-match between substrate and component. Contact the factory for thermal expansion data.

2. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS
P.F.D., Inc. Ceramic dielectrics are subject to mechanical damage from shock to the inherently brittle ceramic. Edge chips may develop, or in severe cases a crack may be induced, rendering the component inoperative. Small edge chips or electrode loss extending up to .020" from the open end will have no effect on operation so long as frequency remains within specification. Any electrode loss on the closed end will adversely affect performance and should be limited to .005" maximum. Resonators are supplied to these limits.

3. ADJUSTING FREQUENCY
Common techniques include removing electrode and /or ceramic dielectric by grinding a chamfer at or near the unmetallized end to raise the self resonant frequency. Care must be taken to make clean cuts of electrode material and to avoid chipping or cracking the edge of the dielectric material. Small adherent chips may come loose at a later stage of assembly or usage thereby raising the self resonant frequency of the device. The best results are obtained by using diamond loaded wheels with the direction of tool rotation such that the removed material is ejected towards the tab.

4.STORAGE
Silver is subject to tarnishing from sulfur bearing materials. Parts are supplied with a tarnish inhibiting coating to reduce storage effects. Keep stock in sealed plastic bags or jars. Tarnished components may require fully activated rosin (RA) or organic acid (OA) flux to obtain satisfactory soldering.
